A bomb went off in a garage beneath the World Trade Center in New York on this day in 1993. While the building itself remained standing, several floors collapsed. Six people died, and over 1,000 were injured. The Federal Bureau of Investigation started investigating the attack and captured several of the attackers within just a few days.

Over the next few years, more of the terrorists behind the attack were captured. The most notable of the arrests was that of Ramzi Ahmed Yousef. In a chilling foreshadowing of the attack in 2001, Yousef expressed regret that the bombed tower hadn't collapsed into the other one. The group was also involved in plots to bomb the United Nations Headquarters and several airliners and assassinate Pope John Paul II.
