Louisiana reaches $45 million settlement with CVS over abuses

Liz Murrill, attorney general of Louisiana, announced a $45 million settlement resolving three separate lawsuits against CVS Health and Caremark. Each lawsuit addressed a different manipulative tactic used by CVS to further its own interests over those of independent pharmacies and patients.

One lawsuit addressed allegations around the use of consumers' personal information while lobbying against a bill in the state legislature. Another was filed over alleged regulatory violations. A third alleged harm to independent pharmacies in Louisiana, due to unfair competitive practices.

Murrill said the funds will be used to "implement pharmacy benefit legislation and Medicaid fraud initiatives in collaboration with the Inspector General and the Louisiana Department of Health."
