On this date in 1993, "Jurassic Park" opened in theaters nationwide, NBC Universal says, launching "a new era of filmmaking featuring unforgettable characters and dinosaurs who won our hearts from the opening song and scene." It was a blockbuster hit that's now considered by many to be one of the greatest movies in history, with its story about a rushed, disastrous attempt to create a theme park featuring cloned dinosaurs on an island off the coast of Costa Rica. The degree to which the original film took the world by storm prompted several successful sequels, as well as the opening of affiliated areas at theme parks in Orlando, Fla., Hollywood, Calif., Osaka, Japan, and Beijing, China.
