Article offers policy recommendations to strengthen independent pharmacies

A new article co-authored by Dima Qato (co-director of the USC-NCPA Pharmacy Access Initiative) considers the ongoing Federal Trade Commission investigation into the consolidation of PBMs and insurers, reviewing practices that disadvantage independent pharmacies and harm patients and recommending policies that would provide relief. Among other things, the authors write that "generally regulating contracts between pharmacies and PBMs may help protect independent pharmacies against anticompetitive or harmful business practices," suggesting federal policymakers look to successful state models of regulation for guidance.
