NCPA raises awareness in Congress of rural pharmacies

NCPA May 24, 2024

On May 16, NCPA submitted a statement for the record to the Senate Finance Committee full committee hearing, Rural Health Care: Supporting Lives and Improving Communities. The statement highlighted the percentage of independent pharmacies in rural communities and their importance in maintaining pharmacy access. The statement also discussed NCPA’s work on the USC-NCPA Pharmacy Access Initiative, which shows that 25 percent of neighborhoods across urban, suburban, and rural neighborhoods are pharmacy shortage areas. NCPA asked the committee to urge CMS to evaluate Medicare Part D pharmacy access standards, which may not represent true pharmacy access according to research from the USC-NCPA Pharmacy Access Initiative and previous work from industry experts.
