A Federal Education

March 19, 1997

Republicans on Capitol Hill are trying to determine in hearings just how much waste, duplication and questionable spending there already is in federal education programs before allocating any more taxpayer money to them as President Clinton has proposed.

  • Federal bureaucrats in 39 separate agencies and departments now run 760 different education programs.
  • Investigators have found that a Texas school district committed 40 hours of staff time and $1,000 to receive a $13 grant for the Safe and Drug Free Schools program -- which it used for parking at a museum.
  • A Michigan school superintendent had to spend 20 percent to 30 percent more in pay to hire union workers to install a federally-funded street light in one of the school's parking lots -- due to federal regulations which favor unions.
