Defense Spending Still Too High?

October 9, 1995

Some Republicans in the Senate appear intent on saving the Legal Services Corporation which provides legal help to the poor through 323 state and local groups costing taxpayers $415 million annually.

Many critics argue that the LSC agenda is much more radical than its rather benign mandate would suggest.

  • It challenged a New Jersey law which would cap welfare payments to mothers who have additional children.
  • It contested a California statute which would temporarily reduce payments for indigents who move into the state.
  • Fought for the rights of drug addicts and alcoholics to receive disability payments.
  • Fought the eviction of drug dealers, vandals and violent tenants from public housing.
  • Litigated for the rights of panhandlers to solicit in New York's subways.
