NATIONAL CENTER FOR POLICY ANALYSIS

Analysis of the Presidential Candidates Health Proposals

John Goodman’s Rating of the Presidential Candidate’s Health Proposals

I served as one of the judges for the National Journal’s recently published report card on the health plans of the leading Democrat (Clinton, Edwards and Obama) and Republican (Giuliani, McCain, and Romney) presidential candidates.  In some cases, my scores differed substantially from those of the other judges.

  1. All Americans Would Have Health Coverage
  2. Proposal will not cause employers financial hardship
  3. Federal government would get its money’s worth
  4. Providers would compete on price and quality
  5. Plan could be funded with existing dollars
  6. Patients could access broad range of providers
  7. Plan would enable consumers to make informed choices
  8. Plan would reduce the rate of health care growth to that of the economy
  9. Plan would encourage patients to seek value
