NCPA: New TV Ad to Greet Presidential Candidates in Iowa

News Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 8, 2003

DALLAS (October 8, 2003) –- The National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA) kicked up its efforts in pre-caucus Iowa Wednesday as it launched a television advertisement designed to raise awareness about the imminent financial crisis facing Social Security. The ad is designed to build understanding of the issue as the candidates prepare to focus on topics impacting seniors in Des Moines next week.

"With all the talk about the need for fiscal responsibility, the $25 trillion debt facing Social Security has been largely ignored," said Matt Moore, senior policy analyst with the NCPA. "With this ad we hope to educate people about the problem and possible solutions."

The ad points viewers to the NCPA's Social Security Web site - www.TeamNCPA.org - where they can learn more about the nature of the crisis and possible solutions. The site also provides access to what each candidate for president has recently said about Social Security and reform.

NCPA, a non-partisan non-profit, is one of America's leading policy education organizations with a long history of research on the problems facing our nation's federal entitlement programs, especially Social Security. NCPA has been active in Iowa for all of 2003 educating residents about the crisis, explaining comparative benefits of different reform options and asking candidates for their solution.

"Iowans have a unique and important opportunity to personally interact with our nation's leaders and thus help shape the debate," said Moore. "If the people of Iowa don't raise this critical issue, then it likely won't get raised at all."

The ad may be viewed online at: www.TeamNCPA.org. The script of the ad follows:

  • "Over the next 15 years, 77 million baby boomers will stop paying into Social Security and will begin collecting benefits from it, creating a shortfall of 25 trillion dollars!
  • Team NCPA is making sure our nation's leaders address this crisis. As candidates visit Iowa, let's make sure we ask them how they'll save Social Security without cutting benefits or raising taxes.
  • Team NCPA has a plan … do the candidates? Learn more at TeamNCPA.org
