Letter To Bush On Social Security Reform Rings Hollow

NCPA Analyst Says Call For Leadership Has Already Been Answered

DALLAS (June 6, 2002) -- House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt Wednesday sent a letter to President Bush describing the need for an open and honest debate on Social Security, and asking for the president's leadership. In response, Matt Moore, Social Security analyst with the non-partisan National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA) says, "the letter demands leadership that President Bush has already provided." "President Bush created a bipartisan commission, co-chaired by former Democratic Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, to study the problems and offer a framework for reform," Moore said. "The commission called for a year long discussion on Social Security reform in order to provide financial security for generations to come."
