NCPA's Women in the Economy Project to Host Women's Agenda Conference
WASHINGTON, D.C.(Feb. 27, 2002)
-- Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison and Rep. Barbara Cubin will be among the featured speakers at a Women's Agenda conference at the National Press Club hosted by the Women in the Economy project of the National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA).
The NCPA will also release several studies at the conference that show how:
- The tax law from top to bottom discriminates against two-earner couples;
- Employee benefit law discriminates against two-earner couples;
- Social Security discriminates against women who work and women who get divorced;
- Labor law discriminates against mothers and caregivers who need flexible work schedules;
- Federal policies make personal and portable health insurance impossible;
- Federal policies toward pensions discriminate against women who move in and out of the labor market and change jobs.
"Women do not operate in the economy the way they did sixty years ago, nor do they operate in the economy in the exact same way as their male counterparts," said Celeste Colgan, the project's director on announcing the conference. "Yet many of the laws that regulate how women interact with the economy, from tax policy to health and retirement programs, still reflect the 1940s reality."
