Well, first you should realize that what Mark did not say. I don't know, since I was in the Congress, Congressmen have gotten more modest or something. He didn't push all his own work. He doesn't just talk about Social Security, but he has a plan, a program for getting us from where we are to a system where people can retire with a nest egg and some real money, and we're counting on you in this Congress to make it happen and we'll give you all the help that we can to make it happen.
Introducing Steve Forbes is part of my job, but to tell you the truth it's a little bit bittersweet. After all, both of us campaigned for the presidency on the idea of privatizing Social Security. Both of us lost, which by Washington standards means that we had a terrible issue and it was the wrong issue. But the truth, of course, is the other way around. The truth is that Steve Forbes is way ahead of his time and the times have a way of catching up with people who have ideas that are the right kind of ideas that enhance liberty and give individuals choice, instead of government choice.
Steve is one of those people. He is inspirational on the subject of Social Security, and in just a moment he is going to tell you why we need a different system than the one we have.
You know of his magazine, of course. Forbes Magazine contains what I have often said are the best two page of journalism in America, and those are the fact and comment pages that Steve writes every week. They are good because they are brief, not all the articles in the magazine are brief, they are good because they are brief, they are good because they are to the point, they are good because they are conservative, and they are good because they explain something that is happening in America that we ought to know about. Steve writes them and I think that is his greatest claim to fame. But he also puts out a pretty good magazine. He puts out Forbes FYI, ASAP, Media Critic, America Legacy, as well as the magazine itself. He has been in the business a long while. He ran an inspirational campaign for the presidency, carried my state of Delaware and the state of Arizona. When he runs the next time he is going to carry a lot more than that, so I suggest you take notes and pay attention because Steve Forbes had something to say. Steve?
