MEDIA ADVISORY: Governor George W. Bush Reforming Texas Public Schools
|
Dallas - Texas Governor George W. Bush will be in Dallas, Tuesday, March 31 to kick off the National Center for Policy Analysis's first 1998 Hatton W. Sumners Distinguished Lecture Series Luncheon. The governor will talk about advances in Texas education reform. Texas has adopted one of the most progressive charter school laws in the country. Last session Governor Bush signed legislation authorizing unlimited charter schools for "at risk" children; authorizing 100 open enrollment charter schools and giving greater choice to parents who are unhappy with the status quo. In addition, Texas has established one of the first statewide school accountability systems and has implemented rigorous testing standards that apply to both regular and charter schools. As the 46th Governor of Texas, George W. Bush has earned a reputation as a compassionate conservative who shapes policy based on the principles of limited government, personal responsibility, strong families and local control. During two legislative sessions he has worked with legislators in a spirit of bipartisan cooperation to enact historic reforms to improve Texas schools, put welfare recipients to work, curb frivolous lawsuits and strengthen the state's criminal justice laws. The Luncheon will begin at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 31 in the Khmer Pavilion at the Wyndham Anatole Hotel. Complementary valet parking will be available at the hotel's Atrium entrance. Individual reservations are $35 per person. Tickets will not be available at the door. To make your reservations call Nancy Stamps at 972/386-6272. WHO: WHAT: WHEN: WHERE:
