Canceling Car Tax Gains Popularity Among States

Ever since Republican James S. Gilmore III handily won the governorship of Virginia last November on a pledge to abolish the state's tax on cars and other items, politicians in other states have begun making similar promises to their electorates.

  • South Carolina's governor has announced a plan to phase out his state's personal property tax on motor vehicles.

  • Guy Millner, the GOP candidate for governor of Georgia, has made abolishing the car tax his central theme of his second try for the office.

  • Legislators in Nevada and Kentucky are also considering at least cutting the tax.

Political analysts report that auto taxes are unpopular with voters and movements to limit or abolish them are gathering steam in other states as well. Gilmore's impressive victory -- with 56 percent of the vote -- is said to have made believers out of a significant number of state legislators.
