About the NCPA |
The National Center for Policy Analysis was established in 1983 in an effort to provide policy makers with timely, detailed and accurate information about the impact of proposed policies and legislation. As a nonprofit, nonpartisan tax-exempt 501(c)(3) public policy research institute, the NCPA relies solely on contributions to produce its primary product: detailed economic studies and forecasts of public policy proposals. The primary goal of the NCPA is to develop and promote private alternatives to government regulation and control, solving problems by relying on the strengths of the competitive, entrepreneurial private sector. By producing credible, accurate, usable analyses of public policy options, the NCPA increasingly is providing leadership to the entire public policy community and shaping the policy agenda for the 1990s. The motto of the NCPA, "Making Ideas Change the World," reflects the NCPA's belief that ideas have enormous power to change the course of human events. The NCPA plays an active role in unleashing that power for positive change by identifying and encouraging the best scholarly research and analysis on major public policy issues, and by marketing the results of this research to the general public, to the business community and to those who make public policy decisions. The NCPA's approach to marketing is unique among research institutes. The NCPA believes that an unread or unnoticed research report represents failure. As a result, the institute aggressively markets its products to maximize their impact by:
Overall, the NCPA's success can be seen in its media coverage. In its 11-year history, NCPA ideas have been covered in 166 wire service stories and 405 nationally syndicated columns. Opinion pieces by NCPA authors have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Investor's Business Daily, Barron's, USA Today and The New York Times. In 1993, the NCPA's media coverage was the equivalent of $3.8 million in advertising and reached over 200 million households.
