The Shifting Priorities Of College Freshmen

College freshmen appear to be more interested in having butter on their bread than pie in the sky, to judge by the latest annual nationwide survey taken of them by the University of California at Los Angeles.

  • Some 75 percent of those surveyed last fall chose becoming "very well off financially" as an important objective -- versus 41 percent interested in developing a meaningful philosophy of life.

  • Back in 1977, both goals were cited by nearly 60 percent of students.

  • Fewer than ever before said they favored tax hikes on the wealthy or said they wanted to reduce the federal budget deficit.

  • The proportion of those concerned with promoting racial understanding or cleaning up the environment dipped to 10-year lows

Those interested in keeping up with political affairs hit an all-time low.
