Downside Of Technology In The Classroom

Education specialists contend there is no evidence that use of computers or the Internet improves student achievement. Nevertheless, billions of dollars are being poured annually into the latest hardware. Is such a headlong commitment a truly sensible course?

  • American schools will invest $5.2 billion in technology this year, outpacing last year's $4.3 billion.

  • Ten years ago, there was one computer for every 37 students -- now there is one for every 7 students.

  • Some 70 percent of American schools -- and about 80 percent of high schools -- are on-line.

  • But only 15 percent of teachers have appropriate computer training.

Critics warn that the billions being spent on classroom technology are billions not going to music, art, libraries, maintenance and other essential functions.

Term papers and other homework are being lifted from computers, while students' favorite Internet sites reportedly have to do with cars, sports and movies.

Meanwhile, American pupils lag other nations in math, science, history, geography and reading.
