Random Murders, Younger Murders

President Clinton celebrates the fact that the number of murders in the United States declined 7 percent from 1993 to 1994, but the fact remains that 23,730 people lost their lives in 1994. Murder is becoming more random and the perpetrators are younger.

  • The number of murders committed by those who do not know their victim now surpasses the number committed by friends and acquaintances.

  • Between 1983 and 1993, the murder rate among 14 to 17 year olds increased by 165 percent.

  • The number of 13 to 15 year olds arrested for murder nearly doubled in the period 1982-92.
