Crime And Gun Control

Poll Finds Opposition To Handgun Ban

Most voters continue to believe strongly that the Constitution protects the right of individuals to bear arms, including handguns, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll. But 63 percent of the public supports moderate gun control measures.

  • The survey found suburban residents are as likely as urban residents to support a range of gun control measures -- with more than eight of 10 supporting the requirement that guns be sold with trigger locks and supporting background checks at gun shows.

  • In rural areas, support is significantly lower.

  • However, about two-thirds oppose a nationwide ban on sale of handguns.

  • And voters are evenly split on whether there should be a national ban on carrying concealed weapons.
