Replacing The U.S. Population |
West Virginia and portions of New England have the lowest fertility rates in the nation, according to demographers. Areas where fertility is high are mostly in the West and Southwest. Over their lifetime women must bear an average of 2.1 children in order for the population to remain stable -- not including the immigration factor.
Worldwide, fertility is highest in Yemen -- with a rate of 7.6 children per woman. Five countries are among the lowest, with a rate of 1.2 children per woman: Bulgaria, Italy, the Czech Republic, Romania and Spain.
