Full-Disclosure Campaign Financing

A bill which would allow donors to give all the funds they want to political candidates -- in full public view -- is reportedly gaining support in Congress. Introduced by Rep. John T. Doolittle (R-Calif.), it represents a rejection of various reform schemes which employ public financing and donation limits -- and which congressional leaders have not been able to agree on.

  • First, it would let individuals and political action committees, as well as parties, give as much as they want to candidates.

  • Second, it would end taxpayer financing of presidential campaigns.

  • Third, it would require rapid filing of campaign reports -- within 24 hours during the final three months of a campaign.

  • The Federal Elections Commission would then enter those reports on the Internet.

Doolittle's bill has so far gained 54 co-sponsors in the House.
