U.S. Works Longer Hours -- and Produces More Per Hour |
American workers are putting in longer hours and getting more accomplished than workers in any other industrialized country, according to a study released yesterday by the International Labor Organization. Accordingly, they are rewarded by a higher standard of living. While hours spent on the job have been increasing for American workers over the past two decades, they have been declining in countries ranging from Canada to Britain to Japan, the study reports.
Although the current U.S. unemployment rate stands at 4.2 percent, nearly one-half of all countries in the study posted unemployment rates above 7 percent in 1996 and 1997.
