Workers Finding Good Jobs

The job mix in the U. S. is shifting and the news is good. Nearly 70 percent of the jobs created in the last two years pay more than the median wage, according to Economic Report.

  • Three out of four workers who lost their jobs from 1993 to 1995 found a new one by last year -- up from 60 percent in the 1979-1983 period.

  • Wages, adjusted for inflation, have grown in line with productivity.

  • Some 85 percent of those who lose their jobs find another which includes health insurance -- an improvement from 75 percent in the 1980s.

Critics of government intervention in the marketplace point to these signs of progress as reminders that government can, all too often, rush in with "cures" for non-existent ailments -- derailing progress in the process.
