Increasing obesity and age will fuel an increase in the number of Americans with diabetes over the next 50 years, according to a study in the November issue of Diabetes Care.

The study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention projects a large increase in diabetes:

  • The number of diagnosed cases will increase 165 percent over the next 50 years -- from 11 million cases in 2000 to 29 million in 2050.
  • The highest increase in prevalence will occur among those age 75 and older.
  • Among ethnic groups, the biggest jump is expected among black men, with a 363 percent increase, followed by black women, with an increase of 217 percent.
