Focus Point - The China ThreatCommentary by Pete du Pont
January 10, 2001
I'm Pete du Pont with the National Center for Policy Analysis. Not that I want to get your New Year off to a disturbing start, but unsettling you occasionally is one of my jobs.
So, I'm going to recommend a book: "The China Threat", by Washington Times Defense and National Security reporter Bill Gertz. Gertz has made a name for himself by getting stories others don't, and this story is a scary one.
It details the ongoing Chinese Military and intelligence targeting of the United States, and our incompetence at responding to the threat. Or, rather, the Clinton Administration's refusal to take the threat as real, and in some cases its actually thwarting FBI and other investigations into chinese activity.
You get the real inside scoop into the Wen Ho Lee story, and trust me, it's not the one you're getting from the White House. You'll learn about other successful chinese attempts at gaining military and nuclear secrets. And it will make you hope somebody in W's incoming crowd got this book for Christmas. It's the China Threat by Bill Gertz.
Those are my ideas, and at the NCPA we know ideas can change the world. I'm Pete du Pont. Next time, rebuilding the military.
