WILLIAM J. GEDWED serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of HealthMarkets®. He has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of HealthMarkets since July 1, 2003. He has served as a Director of the Company since June 2000 and is a member of the Executive and Nominating Committees of the Board of Directors.
Mr. Gedwed serves as a Director and Chairman of the Board of Directors of The MEGA Life and Health Insurance Company, Mid-West National Life Insurance Company of Tennessee based in Texas, The Chesapeake Life Insurance Company and Fidelity First Insurance Company.
He joined HealthMarkets in 1997 when the Company acquired his company, NMC Holdings, Inc. Mr. Gedwed left HealthMarkets in February 2000 to oversee his private investments which included NMC Holdings, which he and his partners reacquired from HealthMarkets in January 2000. He rejoined the Company in July 2003 as President and Chief Executive Officer.
Mr. Gedwed received his BS in 1980 and his MBA in 1992 from the University of Houston.
Mr. Gedwed is a Board Member of NMC Holdings and KIPP TRUTH Academy, one of the Knowledge Is Power Program schools. He is also a Board Member for America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) and previously served on the Advisory Council of the National Center for Policy Analysis.

Effective April 5, 2006, HealthMarkets (formerly UICI) merged with affiliates of The Blackstone Group, Goldman Sachs Capital Partners and DLJ Merchant Banking Partners, each of which is a private equity firm. Following the merger, the stockholders of HealthMarkets include members of management, HealthMarkets' dedicated insurance agents associated with the UGA-Association Field Services or Cornerstone America marketing divisions and the investment affiliates of the private equity firms.
