INTERNSHIP PROGRAM FOR 1999

Students are exposed to the world of ideas in the public policy arena.

The National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA), located in Dallas, Texas, is a nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy research institute that examines issues from the point of view of free enterprise. NCPA's activities are concentrated in several major areas of public policy including tax policy, health care policy, criminal justice, Social Security and Medicare, environment and welfare reform. The goal of the NCPA is to seek innovative private-sector solutions to public policy problems.

The NCPA internship program exposes students to the world of ideas and provides experience in the public policy arena. The program offers opportunities in research, writing, public affairs, government affairs and the Internet.

Domestic Policy Research & Publications. The domestic policy department analyzes the economic impact of U.S. policy in health care, crime, welfare reform, environmental regulation, and tax and budget proposals. Interns provide research, writing and general support to the Vice President of Domestic Policy, policy analysts and senior fellows. Interns may be assigned to a specific analyst. Interns may also conduct research on proposed reforms in Social Security and education and give writing and editorial support on publications to the NCPA Senior Scholar.

Public Affairs. The public affairs department promotes NCPA ideas by using business marketing strategies. Information is distributed to the media -- both print and broadcast -- through press releases, opinion editorials, radio and television interviews and the Internet. Public Affairs also oversees the NCPA Hatton W. Sumners Lecture Series and other events. The intern's duties would include gathering information for press releases; booking interviews for policy experts, making press calls to update the media database, working on special events and providing general support to the Vice President of Public Affairs.

Government Affairs. The Government Affairs department operates from the NCPA's Washington, DC office. This program provides hands-on experience in creating and promoting congressional briefings to educate members of Congress and their staffs, identifies key legislative issues and proposals and, working with NCPA policy experts, determines if educational material needs to be prepared.

Idea House. Idea House is the NCPA's website on the Internet. It contains a "cybrary" of all NCPA publications, provides a place for research and debate and keeps its visitors up-to-date on policy issues. Interns assist with HTML programming, linking, organizing, setting up new sites and contributing to the ongoing improvement of Idea House.
