Capitol Hill Testimony/ Briefings/ Events
 
  • NCPA President John C. Goodman and Kenneth Thorpe, Chairman of the Emory University School of Public Health and the primary architect of Sen. John Kerry's health plan, were invited by the National Press Club to debate the Bush and Kerry health plans in Washington, D.C. on September 22.
  • Goodman and Thorpe also debated the Bush and Kerry health plans at a standing-room-only briefing in the Capitol.
  • Reps. Bob Portman (R-OH) and Benjamin Cardin (D-MD) joined Brookings Institution economist Peter Orszag and Goodman at a Capitol Hill briefing on reforming 401(k) plans on September 14. The briefing was co-sponsored by the NCPA and the Brookings Institution to lay out a new set of reforms proposed by scholars at both institutions.
  • Goodman spoke about the NCPA’s new book, Lives at Risk, at a book forum sponsored by the Cato Institute on September 29 in Washington, D.C. Devon Herrick and Gerald Musgrave were coauthors of the book, which was published by Rowman and Littlefield. C-Span’s Book Notes covered the forum.
  • NCPA Senior Fellow Bruce Bartlett told congressional staff and media that the financial outlook for Social Security and Medicare is bleak and the impact on the federal budget is immediate at a Capitol Hill briefing sponsored by the Heritage Foundation on July 9.
